Before my very first tea ceremony, tears began streaming down my cheeks before even taking a sip. Just watching my tea mentor pour and serve with such grace, love, and devotion immediately brought me back to ancient ways of living that many of us have long forgotten.

I cried because I’d forgotten what it was like to live slowly and intentionally, for every breath to be savored as a sacred ritual.

I cried because I’d forgotten how to sit silently in a sacred circle, feeling each others’ hearts and not needing to say a word but knowing you are completely understood.

I cried because I’d forgotten that I was of the Earth, and the hundred-year-old tea leaves gently whispered ancient stories of sun, rain, and stars.

I cried because I’d forgotten, and I cried because it was a joy to remember once more.

This practice has helped me come home to myself. Almost all of my poems flow through during tea ceremonies. Many of my tears come during them too. Sometimes I feel pure bliss and connection with all life. Each experience is different and each is beautiful.
